First Virtual Reality film screening at our Department!

13 stycznia 2023 | Karolina Dziubata

With the screening of “Sztynort 1935” (PL 2019) written and directed by Jakub Maiński, the first VR piece in the history of the institute was presented to research staff and students as part of our weekly Tuesday seminars. In two sequential screenings, 15 individuals attended the full-length film of 70 minutes, the first of its kind in Europe. It was shown on Oculus Go Virtual Reality headsets that Warsaw-based director and writer Jakub Maińśki, brought along with him to Poznań.

The experience allowed the viewers to attend an evening dinner and family gathering at an East Prussian estate, possibly in the year 1935, during which the attendees discuss the future implications of their state introducing eugenics as a legal principle, like Nazi Germany did with the Nuremberg Racial Laws in 1935. The film was produced with a German-Polish cast and acted in both languages with respective subtitling. It was shot in the estate of Sztynort as part of STN:ORT Festival 2019.

After “returning” from the experience, there was time for a discussion about the content, the format and the production process with Jakub Maiński and with dr Hannah Wadle, the producer of the film (FairerTales). The audience was interested in the following question: What are the possibilities and challenges of working with immersion techniques on critical contents? How can it be used, but potentially also abused? How do different, German and Polish audiences react on the subject? What kind of sensory engagements are amplified through immersion? What happens to narrativity and the curation of space and attention in VR experiences?

The event invited to the new questions and perspectives and opened a critical and constructive discussion about Anthropology and new immersive technologies.

Pierwszy pokaz filmu Virtual Reality w Instytucie Antropologii i Etnologii w Poznaniu!

Wraz z seansem filmu „Sztynort 1935” (PL 2019) napisanego i wyreżyserowanego przez Jakuba Maińskiego, pierwsze w historii instytutu dzieło VR zostało zaprezentowane pracownikom naukowym i studentom w ramach naszych cotygodniowych seminariów wtorkowych.
