Harming by Interviewing. Methodological and Ethical Dilemmas of In-deep Interviews

The need to expand the knowledge on the people in the exile (refugees, asylum seekers and other immigrants requesting the legalization of their status), who experienced deportation or are often being in constant threat of deportation, provokes two different undesirable effects: 1) unintentional exposure to the exploitation of the interviewees; 2) damaging of research practices. For example, the researchers looking for interviewees risk coming across people, who were victims of violence, long term confinement and other forms of abuse. Conducting in-deep interviews with them, in the situation of high legal and existential uncertainty, caused the mental strain and stress, which is a harmful practice. Finally, the needs for securing the interviewees’ situation and increasing the possibility of getting permission to stay, influence the quality of collected data (false or partial information).

In this article we want to explore the methodological and ethical dilemmas that unfolds while carrying out in-depth or biographical interviews with persons who are in constant danger of being deported or have already experienced deportation. We argue that researchers by making them relive their traumatic experiences and thus loading them with often extreme emotional and psychological weight, can harm the interviewee. We urge to rethink the research methods used to obtain information from people in the exile people requesting their permission to live in Europe. Furthermore, we emphasize the need for a better academic preparation to work among vulnerable groups.

This work is based on two clusters of ethnographic research. The first is based on the fieldwork conducted with the people on the exile traversing the migratory Balkan route (2015-2016), and upon their arrival to the country of destination (2017 – 2018). The second one is based on the research conducted in refugee camps in Southern Italy (2017- 2019) and the multipart interview with eleven exiled persons living in France and Italy (2018-2020).

Seminaria naukowe IAiE UAM stanowią forum otwartej dyskusji akademickiej na temat najnowszych publikacji przygotowywanych przez pracowników i doktorantów Instytutu oraz realizowanych przez nich badań i projektów. W ramach seminariów odbywają się także wykłady gościnne będące okazją do wymiany poglądów z badaczami z kraju i zagranicy reprezentującymi różne ośrodki oraz dyscypliny naukowe, którym bliskie jest podejście antropologiczne, kładące nacisk na analizowanie zjawisk kulturowych w powiązaniu z towarzyszącymi im procesami i relacjami społecznymi.

Seminaria mają charakter otwarty, ich adresatami są wszyscy zainteresowani, w tym zwłaszcza pracownicy, doktoranci i studenci IAiE. Celem spotkań jest inspirowanie aktywnego życia naukowego, integracja środowiska oraz popularyzacja antropologii społeczno-kulturowej.
