The new senses of sacrifice. The kurban bayram (Feast of the Sacrifice) in Istanbul (Turkey), between intimate practice and global implications
The presentation draws upon a fieldwork experience conducted in Istanbul about the Feast of the Sacrifice (kurban bayram), one of the main rituals of the Muslim calendar (mainly sunni here). Devoted to the memory of the fundational Ibrahim gesture and as such an intimate practice endowed with a rich symbolic meaning, the sacrifice raises nonetheless complex public questions in social, technical, sanitary, economic, but also political terms. My intention is to expose and discuss the everchanging and sometimes conflicting moral economies of a ritual performance which I analyze as a viewpoint on the transformation of the religious sphere, in front of global pressures such as market economy, political struggle or sanitization of the urban space. I will stress in particular the issues of ritual marketing, urban governance and humanitarian practice, to address the ways Muslim believers and religious authorities, but also commercial, institutional, political and non-governmental stakeholders now adapt and reinvent the sense, the norms and the values of the sacrifice.

Our research seminars are a forum for open academic discussion on the latest publications prepared by the Department’s employees and doctoral students, as well as on the research and projects they carry out. As part of the seminars, guest lectures are also held, which are an opportunity to exchange views with researchers from Poland and abroad, representing various centers and scientific disciplines, who are close to the anthropological approach, emphasizing the analysis of cultural phenomena in connection with the accompanying social processes and relations.
The seminars are open to all interested, especially employees, PhD students and students of our Department. The aim of the meetings is to inspire active scientific life, integrate the community and popularize socio-cultural anthropology.
