dr Małgorzata Kowalska, Assistant Professor

Research interests:

I became passionate about anthropology after I had finished my Masters and started working in marketing – first abroad, later in Poland. This is when my fascination with the reality and language of the business and political elites, and the performative discourses of Polish capitalism began, which eventually led to work on my doctoral thesis. While working at FREE, a project funded under the 7th Framework Programme of the European Commission, I had a chance to analyze Euro 2012 as a great modernization project and a test for state and regional democracy (although in private I prefer cycling to football).

I am interested in economic anthropology (and anthropology of political economies) on various levels, including the negotiation of power and modernisation narratives, especially in Europe's postsocialist countries. More recently, I have begun devoting more and more time to the issue of climate change, along with a critical analysis of its cultural premises and local reactions to it.
